For centuries, Tiberina Island has been a symbol of healing, a sacred place where history and legend intertwine. In 293 BC, the serpent of Asclepius pointed the Romans to the site of the temple dedicated to the god of medicine. Over the centuries, the island became a center of hospitality and assistance, from ancient hospices to the Benedictine monastery and the Bolognese brotherhood. Since 1585, the Fatebenefratelli founded the hospital that still bears their name. By the late 1500s, the small adjacent pharmacy was documented, an integral part of the island’s mission of care.
